Knee arthroplasty
Knee Arthroplasty
Pain is the first symptom of the condition. It initially occurs after fatigue and then after prolonged immobility. Many times patients report that they have difficulty getting out of bed or after sitting for a short time. Later, the pain becomes constant even during rest and sometimes wakes the patient at night. The pain can last from a few days to months.
Stiffness is the second symptom and can even lead to limited joint movement. Deformity is the final outcome of the condition.
- What is knee arthroplasty?
This is a surgical procedure where the knee joint is replaced with metal and plastic implants.
The technique is painless and bloodless. Postoperatively, mobilization is immediate and with full range of motion of the knee. The patient's stay in the hospital is shorter (2-3 days) and finally, after 15-20 days, the patient can gradually return to his daily activities.
- Knee arthroplasty is divided into:
Partial knee arthroplasty: Where only the worn part of the knee is replaced.
Total knee arthroplasty: Total knee arthroplasty consists of a metal implant at the end of the femur, a metal and plastic spacer at the top of the tibia, and, if necessary, a plastic button on the patella.
- Recovery
The patient usually needs 2-3 months to fully recover. Of course, each case is unique.
